The AKG D5 is designed for lead vocalists who need to be heard clearly over loud bands. Unlike standard dynamic mics that can sound “muddy” or muffled, the D5 uses AKG’s patented Laminated Varimotion Diaphragm. This technology varies the thickness of the diaphragm across its diameter, allowing it to vibrate freely for a crisp, detailed sound that requires very little EQ at the mixing board.

Maximum Gain Before Feedback

Feedback is the enemy of a great performance. The D5 features a tight Supercardioid Polar Pattern. This means it is extremely sensitive to sound directly in front of it (your voice) while rejecting noise from the sides (drums, guitar amps). This allows you to push your monitor volume higher without the squeal of feedback.

Built Like a Tank

The D5 is engineered for the rigors of touring. It features a rugged die-cast zinc alloy body and a spring-steel wire-mesh grille. Unlike regular steel grilles that dent permanently when dropped, spring-steel bounces back, protecting the precious capsule inside.

Silence the Handling Noise

Microphone rumble can ruin a quiet ballad. The D5 employs a Dual Shock Mount system that isolates the capsule from the body. This eliminates the mechanical noise caused by holding the mic or moving around on stage, ensuring the audience hears your voice, not your grip.

Is This The Right Mic For You?

Vs. Shure SM58 The SM58 is the industry standard, known for its warm, mid-focused sound. The AKG D5 is brighter, crisper, and has more “air” (high-frequency detail) right out of the box.

• Choose the SM58 if you want a classic, safe, warm tone.

• Choose the D5 if you want a modern, hi-fi sound that cuts through a dense mix without needing EQ.

Vs. AKG D5 S (Switched) The D5 (standard) has no switch, which is preferred by professional sound engineers to prevent accidental muting. The D5 S is the exact same microphone but adds a silent On/Off switch.

• Does it need Phantom Power?

  • No. The D5 is a dynamic microphone. It works with any standard mixer, PA system, or audio interface without 48V phantom power.

• Is it good for instruments?

  • Yes! With a max SPL of 156 dB, it is fantastic for snare drums, guitar amps, and brass instruments. The supercardioid pattern helps isolate the instrument from bleed.

• How do I place my floor monitors?

  • Because it is Supercardioid, the “dead spot” is not directly behind the mic (180°), but slightly to the sides (approx 120°). Place your monitors at 45-degree angles to your left and right for the best rejection.

• Is a cable included?

  • No, the standard retail box does not include an XLR cable. We sell high-quality XLR cables separately if you need one.
