CRAFTING SOUND SINCE 1887

YAMAHA DRUMS, BUILT ON A CENTURY OF SOUND

Yamaha began in Hamamatsu in 1887, when Torakusu Yamaha repaired an imported reed organ and set out to build one himself. That combination of musical curiosity, precise craft and engineering still defines the company.

Yamaha drum production started in 1967 with the D20 and D30. The same era introduced the Air Seal System—a shell-forming process designed for consistent roundness, strength and tone.

From the landmark Recording Custom to today’s Absolute Hybrid Maple, Live Custom and DTX systems, Yamaha has kept acoustic craft and electronic innovation in the same conversation.

1887
Torakusu Yamaha builds his first reed organ and establishes the company’s instrument-making roots.
1967
The D20 and D30 begin Yamaha drum production, together with the Air Seal shell-making tradition.
1977
The birch-shell YD9000 arrives—the landmark kit later known around the world as Recording Custom.
TODAY
Acoustic drums, DTX electronics and hybrid tools serve players from the practice room to the world stage.
