Vic Firth RUTE 505 Multi-Rod Drumsticks

Flexible Bristle Design — Low Volume & Smooth Response

The RUTE 505 utilizes 25 flexible plastic bristles (.094″) rather than rigid wood dowels. This design significantly reduces acoustic volume compared to traditional drumsticks while providing a softer attack and controlled rebound. The result is a playing experience well suited for low-volume rehearsals, acoustic performances, and musical settings where conventional sticks may be too loud.

Vinyl Handle Construction — Comfortable Grip & Control

Unlike the original wood-handled RUTE models, the RUTE 505 features a durable black vinyl handle designed to provide a secure and comfortable grip. The handle helps maintain control during extended playing sessions while offering a feel that complements the flexible nature of the bristle design.

Hybrid Playing Characteristics — Between Brushes & Rods

The flexible plastic bristles allow the RUTE 505 to function somewhere between a traditional brush and a rod-style implement. Players can achieve articulate drum and cymbal responses while also exploring lighter textures and dynamic control that may not be possible with conventional wooden rods.

Why It Works

The Vic Firth RUTE 505 combines the flexibility associated with brush-style playing and the familiar striking motion of rod-style implements. Its low-volume design helps drummers maintain musical expression and articulation while reducing overall acoustic output.

Where It Really Excels

Ultra-Low Volume Performances: Ideal for coffee houses, acoustic venues, smaller worship environments, and other situations where strict volume control is important.

Jazz & Acoustic Ensembles: Provides subtle articulation and controlled dynamics that complement lower-volume musical settings.

Practice & Rehearsal Environments: Helps reduce overall drum kit volume while maintaining a natural playing experience.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the bristles be replaced or adjusted?

No. The plastic bristles are permanently secured within the handle during manufacturing and are not designed to be replaced individually. The RUTE 505 does feature a movable rubber ring that adjusts the spread of the bristles, allowing players to dial in their preferred response. As with all bristle-style implements, repeated heavy playing may accelerate wear on the bristles over time.

How does the RUTE 505 compare to the original RUTE?

The RUTE 505 uses flexible plastic bristles rather than wood dowels, producing a softer attack and lower overall volume. This makes it particularly well suited for quieter musical settings and players seeking a response closer to a brush than a traditional rod.
