The Catalina Club blends traditional configurations and classic tone with sleek, contemporary hardware. Its 7-ply Gretsch-formula mahogany shells and 14-inch-deep bass drum give a warm, punchy vintage sound, in a compact 18-inch kit that fits small stages and practice rooms and is easy to transport.
Every shell is cut with 30-degree bearing edges. Compared with a sharper 45-degree edge, a 30-degree edge keeps more of the shell in contact with the drumhead, so the drums sound warmer and rounder, with fewer overtones and more of each drum's fundamental pitch. The interiors are left natural.
The 12-inch tom hangs on Gretsch's Mini GTS suspension mount instead of a bracket bolted through the shell, so it resonates freely and sounds fuller. Reduced-mass tom brackets and low-profile floor tom leg brackets keep the hardware on the shells to a minimum.
The bass drum carries Gretsch's round “gas cap” mount plate for the tom holder, and telescopic spurs that adjust in length to keep the kit steady on any floor. A single cymbal mount with a 12.7mm L-arm is included, and Gretsch T-Wing nuts and bolts make adjustments easy by hand.
The matching 14x5-inch mahogany snare has a Gretsch throw-off for switching the snare wires on and off, and the snare and toms have 1.6mm triple-flanged hoops for an open, lively sound and clean rimshots. Satin Walnut Glaze is a satin lacquer finish, and the bass drum hoops are wood with matching lacquer. The kit comes fitted with Remo UT Ambassador heads, so it sounds good straight out of the box.
Gretsch has been making drums since 1883, when Friedrich Gretsch opened a small music shop in Brooklyn, New York, making banjos, drums and tambourines. Fred W. Gretsch, the founder’s great-grandson, later bought the company back and returned it to the family.
Gretsch drums have been played by Max Roach, Art Blakey, Elvin Jones, Jimmy Cobb and Charlie Watts, and its USA drums are built in Ridgeland, South Carolina.
