Cympad Shark Gated The Drum Dampener

Cympad The Shark Gated Drum Dampener (Model: SRK-SD1): Dynamic Tone Control with Enhanced Attack

The Cympad The Shark Gated Drum Dampener (Model: SRK-SD1) is an innovative and highly specialized accessory designed for drummers who seek nuanced control over their drum sound. Unlike traditional static dampening methods, The Shark employs a unique “gated” design to enhance the drum’s initial attack while simultaneously managing its sustain and resonance. Developed by Cympad, a Swiss company celebrated for its cellular foam cymbal optimization products, The Shark brings a distinct approach to drum tone sculpting, particularly on snare drums.

Key Features for Dynamic Sound Shaping

The Shark dampener stands out with its intelligent design aimed at preserving the drum’s character while offering refined control:

• “Gated” Dampening Concept: The core innovation of The Shark is its “gated” dampening principle. It’s designed to enhance the initial attack of the drum hit, allowing the drum to “speak” clearly at the beginning of the stroke. Subsequently, its unique design subtly reduces unwanted volume and resonance, helping to shorten the decay and eliminate excessive overtones. This creates a punchy, focused sound akin to a “gated” effect in audio production.

• Exclusive Hinged/Floating Design: The Shark features an exclusive hinged design that allows the dampener to “float” on the drumhead’s playing surface. This allows it to dynamically react to the intensity of each stroke. A lighter stroke may produce less dampening, while a harder stroke engages more of the dampening effect, providing a more consistent and controlled sound across various dynamics.

• Cellular Foam Material: While specific material details are proprietary, it is made from a high-quality, dense cellular foam (similar to Cympad’s cymbal pads). This material is chosen for its sound absorption properties and durability.

• Easy Adhesion and Repositioning: The dampener utilizes an adhesive backing to secure it to the outer edge of the drumhead. It’s designed to be reusable and easy to mount/unmount, allowing drummers to experiment with placement and quickly adjust their drum sound. For rough-surface coated drumheads, a small sticker is often included to provide an optimal surface for adhesion.

• Maintains Drum’s Tone: A key benefit emphasized by Cympad is that The Shark dampens the drum without fundamentally changing its inherent tone. Instead, it refines it by cutting unwanted ring and excessive sustain, leaving a clearer, more articulate drum sound.

• Rugged, Reusable Carrying Case: Each Cympad The Shark dampener typically comes packaged in a durable, reusable plastic carrying case. This protects the dampener when not in use and makes it convenient to store and transport in a stick bag or hardware case, ensuring its longevity.

• Specifically for Drums: While Cympad is known for cymbal products, The Shark is specifically engineered as a drum dampener, primarily used on snare drums, but potentially applicable to tom-toms depending on desired effect.

The Cympad The Shark Gated Drum Dampener offers drummers a unique and dynamic approach to sound control, providing a clean, articulate attack with managed resonance for a refined and professional drum sound in various musical contexts.
