Remo Encore Coated 14″ Snare Drum Head

Remo Encore Coated 14″ Batter Drum Head (EN-0114-BA): A Value-Oriented Ambassador-Style Head

The Remo Encore Coated 14″ Batter Drum Head (EN-0114-BA) is a single-ply, coated drumhead that is part of Remo’s “Encore” line.1 The Encore series is specifically manufactured in Remo’s facility in Taiwan to offer a more affordable, value-oriented option that mirrors the specifications of their iconic American-made heads, like the Ambassador.2 The EN-0114-BA provides a classic open, warm, and resonant sound with a strong attack, making it a versatile choice for a wide range of musical applications.3

Key Features for a Versatile, Classic Sound

The EN-0114-BA drumhead is engineered with specific attributes to deliver a consistent, high-performance sound:

• Single-Ply 10mil Mylar Film: The head is constructed from a single ply of 10mil Mylar film.4 This medium-weight thickness is the industry standard for a single-ply head, providing a great balance of open sound, resonance, sensitivity, and durability.5

• Coated Finish: The coated finish on the surface of the head provides a warm, slightly drier tone compared to clear heads.6 The coating also makes it suitable for brushwork, a feature that is essential for jazz and acoustic settings.

• Open Sound and Resonant Sustain: The single-ply construction allows for maximum vibration and a long, open sustain, letting the drum’s natural tone shine through.7 It is an excellent choice for drummers who prefer an un-dampened, classic drum sound.

• Warm Attack: The combination of the single ply and the coated finish produces a warm, full attack that is articulate and clear, capable of cutting through a mix.8

• Versatile Application: The classic sound profile of this head makes it suitable for use as a batter head for snare drums and toms.9 It is also an effective choice for a resonant (bottom) head on toms. This versatility makes it a popular choice for genres like jazz, pop, R&B, and lighter rock.

• Manufacturing Distinction: A key difference between the Encore and the American-made Weatherking series is the hoop construction.10 The Encore series uses a crimped aluminum channel and a steel insert ring to secure the film, while the American-made heads use a liquid-glue poured channel.11 While the sound is very similar, some drummers may find the crimped heads to fatigue at a quicker pace.12 The Encore series is a perfect example of Remo providing a reliable, cost-effective option while maintaining a high standard of sound quality.

The Remo Encore Coated 14″ Batter Drum Head (EN-0114-BA) is a reliable and budget-friendly alternative to the standard Ambassador, offering drummers a classic, versatile, and resonant sound for their 14-inch snare drums or toms.13
