Evans Calftone — The Vintage Calfskin Feel, Without the Fragility
The Evans Calftone head is a tribute to the original calfskin drumheads that defined the sound of jazz, big band, and early rock drumming — without any of the maintenance headaches. The Calftone’s specially textured coating mimics the feel and look of genuine calfskin: a warm, natural, slightly rough playing surface that produces a thicker, darker, more vintage-voiced tone than modern white-coated or clear film heads.
Unlike genuine calf, the Calftone is completely unaffected by humidity and temperature changes — it will not go slack in a tropical monsoon or crack in a cold dry room. The textures coating also enhances brush articulation enormously, producing the rich swish and clean brush sweeps on snare that calfskin was always prized for.
