Tycoon ETD Talking Drum

Traditional African Rhythms with Expressive Pitch Modulation

The Tycoon ETD Talking Drum is an authentic and beautifully crafted percussion instrument that brings the rich, expressive sounds of West African music to your hands. Known for its unique ability to mimic the inflections of human speech, the talking drum is a captivating instrument that allows drummers and percussionists to convey complex rhythmic patterns and melodic phrases through dynamic pitch changes.

This particular model, the Tycoon ETD (Ethnic Traditional Drum) Talking Drum, is meticulously constructed to ensure both traditional sound and modern durability. The body of the drum is typically carved from a single piece of sustainably harvested Siam Oak (also known as Rubberwood), a wood prized for its resonant properties and strength. Both drumheads are made from high-quality natural rawhide (often goatskin), which provides a warm, authentic tone and excellent responsiveness. The key to the talking drum’s unique sound lies in the tension cords that run between the two heads. By squeezing these cords with one arm while striking the drumhead with a curved stick (or hand), the player can instantaneously change the pitch of the drum. This allows for a wide range of vocal-like inflections, creating a truly expressive percussive voice. The Tycoon ETD Talking Drum is designed to be comfortable to hold and play, making it an excellent addition for world music ensembles, educational settings, or for any percussionist looking to expand their sonic palette with a culturally significant and uniquely expressive instrument.
