Today's working drummers need a kit that can do it all, and do it well. Renown handles the smooth feel of the 1950s, the attack of the 60s and 70s and the clarity of modern recordings with equal ease. It delivers the traditional Gretsch sound with an open, harmonic tone and the versatility to meet the demands of the hardest-working drummers.
The 7-ply Gretsch-formula maple shells are cut with 30-degree bearing edges. Compared with a sharper 45-degree edge, a 30-degree edge keeps more of the shell in contact with the drumhead, so the drums sound warmer and rounder, with more of each drum's fundamental pitch. The interiors are finished with Gretsch's exclusive Silver Sealer, the same interior finish used on Gretsch's USA-made drums.
Renown uses Gretsch's player-friendly “302” double-flanged hoop, the same hoop used on Gretsch's Brooklyn and Broadkaster drums. It gives the focused sound of a die-cast hoop, but it is lighter and less rigid, so the drum breathes and reaches maximum resonance. The result is a controlled attack with a more open tone than a die-cast hoop.
The 10-inch and 12-inch toms hang from a bass drum-mounted double tom holder on Gretsch's low-profile GTS suspension mounts, so they resonate freely instead of being choked by a bracket on the shell. Memory locks let you return to the same setup quickly at every gig, and Gretsch T-Wing nuts and bolts make adjustments easy by hand.
Our Renown kit adds a matching 14"x14" floor tom (RN2-1414F) to the standard 16"x14" floor tom, giving four tom voices from 10 to 16 inches for longer, more melodic fills. The toms come with clear Remo Emperor batter heads, a two-ply head for a fat, punchy attack, with Gretsch by Remo resonant heads. Low-profile leg brackets keep hardware on the shells to a minimum.
The matching 14x5.5-inch maple snare shares the 30-degree edges, Silver Sealer interior and 302 hoops of the toms. It is fitted with a coated Remo USA Ambassador batter head and a Gretsch by Remo resonant head, for a warm, responsive snare sound straight out of the box.
The 22x18-inch bass drum has maple hoops with matching Satin Tobacco Burst lacquer. A Remo USA Clear Powerstroke batter and a coated white Gretsch front head with a muffle ring give a punchy, controlled low end without extra dampening. It carries the double tom holder and a single cymbal mount with a 12.7mm L-arm.
Gretsch has been making drums since 1883, when Friedrich Gretsch opened a small music shop in Brooklyn, New York, making banjos, drums and tambourines. Fred W. Gretsch, the founder’s great-grandson, later bought the company back and returned it to the family.
Gretsch drums have been played by Max Roach, Art Blakey, Elvin Jones, Jimmy Cobb and Charlie Watts, and its USA drums are built in Ridgeland, South Carolina.

Gretsch's 5-piece Renown RN2-E825 shell pack has one 16" floor tom. We pair it with the matching 14"x14" floor tom (RN2-1414F) in the same finish, so you get two floor toms and a wider tom range.
