A complete tonal map.

The 22 × 16 bass drum is surrounded by 8 × 7.5, 10 × 7.5 and 12 × 8 rack toms, then 14 × 13, 16 × 15 and 18 × 16 floor toms. Yamaha Recording Custom 8-Piece Shell Pack – Solid Black - Yamaha Recording Custom 8-Piece Solid Black configuration

A legend refined—not reinvented

Yamaha spent three years developing the current Recording Custom with Steve Gadd. His brief was not to erase the familiar character, but to improve it: a fatter bass-drum voice, snares that respond across a wider tuning range and drums that feel immediately comfortable rather than unfamiliar.

Six plies of North American birch

Each shell uses 6-ply, 6 mm North American birch with Yamaha’s dark-brown interior treatment. Birch brings punch and definition, while its controlled behaviour helps neighbouring drums remain distinct—exactly the separation engineers need when several close microphones are working at once.

Mass in the lug. Focus in the note.

The redesigned one-piece high-tension lug is deliberately weighted. That added mass helps reinforce the lower-frequency core, attenuate unwanted shell noise and preserve a crisp, articulate note without relying on internal muffling. Internal lug locks support tuning stability through long sessions and demanding shows.

Thirty degrees. Wide-open tuning.

Steve Gadd selected the 30° / R1.5 bearing edge after Yamaha tested multiple shell-and-edge combinations. It produces a sharp response, seats different head choices confidently and keeps the drum easy to tune from controlled studio pitches to more open, resonant live settings.

The right heads from day one

Toms and floor toms arrive with Yamaha Remo Ambassador Coated batters over Ambassador Clear resonant heads for warm attack, clarity and open sustain. The 22-inch bass drum pairs a Smooth White P3 Yamaha-logo front head with a Coated P3 batter for controlled, microphone-friendly punch.

YESS: less contact, more shell

Yamaha’s YESS mount joins bracket and shell through the smallest practical contact area. By reducing damping at the mounting point, the rack toms retain their natural decay and pitch while remaining easy to position around the player.

Floor toms that set up fast

Open-type floor-tom brackets use wing bolts to clamp firmly without damaging the leg. The design is practical on stage, quick to adjust and gives the player direct control over positioning and decay across every floor-tom size in the configuration.

Quiet hardware where it matters

Die-cast bass-drum hooks use insertion plates for dependable, noise-conscious operation. Alongside wood hoops, convertible spurs and the weighted lug system, they keep the hardware solid and unobtrusive so microphones capture the drum—not mechanical distractions.

Every drum earns its place in the mix

The result is why Recording Custom remains a reference point: fast transient detail, a rounded fundamental and enough controlled sustain to sound alive without becoming difficult. The shells speak clearly beside one another, giving engineers usable separation and drummers a coherent instrument from the highest tom to the bass drum.

Product FAQ

Exactly what is included in this 8-Piece configuration?

The 22 × 16 bass drum is surrounded by 8 × 7.5, 10 × 7.5 and 12 × 8 rack toms, then 14 × 13, 16 × 15 and 18 × 16 floor toms. Add the matching 14 × 5.5 birch snare and this becomes an unusually complete instrument—capable of detailed melodic movement, orchestral swells and huge low-register punctuation. The TH945B double-tom holder is also included.

Is the matching snare included?

Yes. This fixed configuration includes the RBS1455 14 × 5.5 North American birch snare in Solid Black.

Why is Recording Custom associated so strongly with studio work?

Its 6-ply birch shells combine clear attack with controlled sustain and strong note separation. That helps individual drums remain intelligible under close microphones and inside a dense mix.

What did Steve Gadd contribute to the current series?

Yamaha developed the current Recording Custom with Steve Gadd over three years. His feedback informed the fatter bass-drum character, broad snare response, 30-degree bearing edge and the overall familiar-but-refined feel.

Which heads are supplied?

Toms and floor toms use Yamaha Remo Ambassador Coated batter and Ambassador Clear resonant heads. The 22-inch bass drum uses a Smooth White P3 front head and Coated P3 batter.

What does the YESS mount change?

YESS reduces the contact area between the mount and rack-tom shell, minimising damping so the drum can sustain and project more naturally.

Are cymbals, stands and pedals included?

No. The TH945B double-tom holder is included, but cymbals, cymbal stands, hi-hat stand, snare stand, bass-drum pedal and throne are sold separately.
