Reference One brings together the best of Pearl's Reference and Reference Pure series. Instead of one shell for every size, each drum gets its own Reference Recipe of birch, maple and mahogany, ply count and bearing edge: brighter woods for cut on the small toms, warmer, deeper woods on the floor toms and bass drum. Every drum performs at its best, and the whole kit sounds like a single instrument.
The 10" tom blends maple and birch for cutting projection and a higher pitch. The 12" tom is six plies of maple, a transitional mid-note that blends warmth and cut. The 14" floor tom pairs maple and mahogany in an 8-ply shell for a fat, controlled low end, the 16" floor tom adds more mahogany for resonant warmth, and the 22" bass drum's mahogany-rich 8-ply shell gives a booming bass tone with articulate punch.
Every shell is built from reduced-thickness EvenPly layers, with plies 30% thinner for enhanced sustain and resonance and more bottom end and tone where you sit. Pearl's SST high-temperature hydraulic curing bonds prime maple, birch and mahogany panels from its Masterworks vault into a multi-ply shell with single-ply resonance and strength.
The toms up to 13" get a 45-degree edge with a rounded apex, for more head contact, attack and tonal control. Drums 14" and larger combine a fully rounded edge with an 8-ply shell, for maximum punch and low-end emphasis.
The R2 Air Tom Suspension System's Dual Arc design carries the mounting weight at the true centre of the tom, and its floating platform meets the shell only at cushioned ResoDisk points top and bottom. You hear the true, uncoloured sound of each tom, with consistent tone at any angle. Included DamperDisks let you shorten the sustain without gels or tape.
This pack includes 2 THL-1030S GyroLock-L tom holders and 2 ADP-30 adapter clamps, one set for each rack tom. GyroLock-L is the first L-rod holder with Pearl's gearless GyroLock positioning: infinite angle adjustment at four points, locked with a single drum key, on a solid 12.7mm L-arm with memory locks and Compass Dial marks, so your set-up is quick to repeat night after night.
MasterCast die-cast hoops give every drum added weight for tonal body and more volume in every stroke, for a radical combination of sustain and attack.
Low-mass STL single swivel lugs (STL-100 on the toms, STL-200 on the bass drum) have a pivoting brass tension casing and less direct shell contact than any other Pearl lug. SST-5047 tension rods, machined from a single piece of stainless steel, turn smoothly with no play for precise, even tuning.
SP-330 spurs have a spring-loaded rubber foot and a retractable spike, and D-054 claws with nylon insulator gaskets protect the hoops. The LG-40 floor tom legs have memory locks and R-40 Air Suspension feet, so the floor toms rest on a cushion of air and keep ringing instead of losing sound to the floor. A BDM-F adjustable muffling pillow comes with the bass drum.
The matching Reference One 14"x5" snare in Aged Honey Burst uses an EvenPly-Six 5.4mm maple and birch shell with Pearl's standard 45-degree edge, for balanced pop, crisp sensitivity and a sharp, focused sound. The toms have Remo Coated Ambassador batters and clear Ambassador resonant heads, and the bass drum has Remo Powerstroke 3 heads, so the kit sounds finished as soon as you tune it.
