Reference One is Pearl's refined hybrid drum concept. Instead of one shell for every size, each drum gets its own "Reference Recipe" of woods, ply count and bearing edge, chosen so that size sounds its best, and the whole kit sounds balanced from the smallest tom to the bass drum.
The 10" tom is maple and birch for extra cut and projection with a higher pitch. The 12" tom is all maple for a warm, punchy mid-note. The 14" floor tom blends maple and mahogany for controlled low-end warmth, and the 16" floor tom and 22" bass drum use more mahogany for controlled bottom-range power and a powerfully articulate, booming bass.
The reduced-thickness EvenPly shells are made with Pearl's SST high-temperature hydraulic curing process, giving a multi-ply bonded shell with single-ply resonance and strength. Each is fitted with MasterCast die-cast hoops, which add weight for tonal body and increase volume on every stroke, for a radical combination of sustain and attack.
The R2 Air Tom Suspension System gives perfectly balanced, weightless tom mounting for high-yield tonal clarity, so the toms sing freely instead of being choked by their mounts.
Low-mass STL single swivel lugs have less direct shell contact than any other Pearl lug, and their pivoting tension casing and precision-machined stainless steel tension rods give smooth, precise, even tuning.
SP330 spurs have a spring-loaded rubber foot and a retractable spike for traction control, and D054 claw hooks with nylon insulators protect the hoops from scratches while clamping evenly.
The matching Reference One 14"x5" snare in Scarlet Fade uses an EvenPly-Six 5.4mm shell with 4 outer plies of maple and 2 inner plies of birch and a standard 45-degree edge, for a warm, resonant sound with heightened top-end pop.
The toms are fitted with Remo Coated Ambassador batters and clear resonant heads, and the bass drum has a Remo Powerstroke 3, so the kit sounds finished as soon as you tune it.
