The Vater VWTR WireTap Retractable Brushes are engineered for drummers seeking versatile, articulate brush tones with modern durability. Featuring light-gauge steel wires with a 5″ (12.7cm) spread and a comfortable rubber handle with a 0.575″ (14.6mm) diameter, these brushes offer a wide range of spread adjustment via a sturdy pull-rod with a round end, allowing players to customize from soft, sweeping sounds to firmer, defined strokes. A unique hard tap surface behind the brush spread provides a solid striking sound, reducing wear on both bristles and drumheads, making them ideal for jazz, folk, or “unplugged” gigs. Users praise their durability, noting they “won’t chip and become useless” and appreciate the retractable design for protecting wires in stick bags. They’re lauded for a “great feel” and suitability for beginners due to the moderate spread, with one user highlighting their longevity for softer playing styles. However, some report uneven bristle lengths or slightly protruding wires, requiring light sanding, and a “hakelig” (sticky) retraction mechanism that may need occasional maintenance. Manufactured in the USA by Vater Percussion in Holbrook, MA, these brushes reflect a legacy since 1956, delivering professional-grade performance for dynamic brush work.
