A slightly thicker 1.2mm brass shell and the Grooved Hoop give this snare rich, warm resonance and sharp projection, so your backbeat has both body and cut.
One snare for many styles
The STARPHONIC Brass has an exceptionally wide frequency and tuning range. Change the tuning and the snare wire tension and you get a great variety of sounds from one drum, so it complements any musical style or playing situation.
Grooved Hoop: vintage design, modern technology
Tama started STARPHONIC by studying how the hoop affects snare sound and how hoops have evolved over time. The Grooved Hoop combines vintage design with modern technology, and is central to the STARPHONIC sound.
Super Sensitive Hi-Carbon snare wires
Redesigned with new materials, a custom end plate shape and a new coil winding pattern, the 20-strand Super Sensitive Hi-Carbon wires fit more closely to the snare-side head for greater sensitivity and a brighter, crisper sound, so ghost notes and soft rolls come through clearly.
Linear-Drive strainer: no snare "slap"
The Linear-Drive strainer moves the snare wires in a true linear motion, so even if you throw the lever quickly, you will not hear the typical slap of the wires hitting the bottom head. Its butt plate is angled 30 degrees to hold the snare cords or tape firmly and reduce unnecessary pressure on the strainer and shell.
Freedom Lug and claw hook: fast, simple head changes
The MTL960S Freedom Lug and claw hook are designed so that, once you loosen the tension rods, each claw hook tilts backwards and away from the Grooved Hoop. The hoop lifts straight off and you can replace the head without taking the tension rods out of the lugs, so there are no loose rods and washers to lose and head changes are quick and simple.
Snare wire control that stays put
A ratchet system on the snare tension adjuster stops the wires from loosening, even at extreme settings, and each click moves the wires just 0.083mm, so you can fine-tune the snare response in tiny steps. The detachable butt plate comes off with the snares still attached, so after changing the snare-side head your wire tension returns to exactly where it was.
Stays in tune while you play
A rubber block inside each claw hook presses against the tension rod once it is tightened, keeping the tension rods from loosening as you play, so the drum holds its tuning.

How do I change the snare-side head without losing my snare setting?
Loosen the two screws on the detachable butt plate and take it off with the snares still attached. When you refit it, the snare wire tension returns to its original setting.
