The “Compact Studio” Standard, Redefined
For years, the entry-level market was dominated by older designs. The AKG C104 changes the game. Released as part of the 2026 C-Series, this microphone brings professional Austrian engineering to the sub-₹12k price point, offering specifications that technically outperform the industry leaders in this category.
At The Bangalore Drum Shop, we recommend the C104 as the perfect “First Microphone” for content creators who want future-proof audio quality without breaking the bank.
The “Goldilocks” Capsule: 22mm
While marketed as a Large Diaphragm Condenser, the C104 uses a precision-engineered 22mm Capsule.
-
Why this matters: A 22mm diaphragm is lighter and faster than a traditional 1-inch capsule. This means it captures the rapid “snap” of acoustic guitar strumming or percussion with better clarity, while still retaining the warmth and “big radio voice” sound you expect for vocals. It is the best of both worlds.
Silence and Power: 14dB Noise / 143dB SPL
Budget microphones are usually noisy. The C104 boasts an impressive 14 dB(A) self-noise, making it significantly quieter than its main competitor (the AT2020). Conversely, it can handle massive volume—up to 143 dB SPL.
-
The Benefit: You can record a whisper-quiet podcast or a screaming guitar amp with the same microphone, and you won’t get hiss or distortion.
Built for the Future
AKG has committed to sustainability. The C104 body is cast from 100% Recycled Post-Industrial (PIR) Metal. It feels heavy, substantial, and “tank-like” in the hand, proving that eco-friendly gear doesn’t have to feel cheap.

Is This The Right Mic For You?
Vs. Audio-Technica AT2020 The AT2020 is a classic, but the AKG C104 is the modern evolution. The C104 has lower self-noise (14dB vs 20dB) and higher SPL handling (143dB vs 144dB). If you want cleaner, quieter recordings for roughly the same price, the C104 is the superior technical choice.
Vs. AKG C151 The C151 is a “Pencil” mic (end-address), while the C104 is a “Side-Address” mic.
-
Choose the C151 if you mostly record instruments (Drum Overheads, Hi-Hats, Acoustic Guitar).
-
Choose the C104 if you are primarily a Vocalist, Podcaster, or Streamer who also records instruments occasionally.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
-
Does it come with a shock mount?
-
No, the C104 comes with a standard hard clip (H82). If you need a shock mount included, consider upgrading to the AKG C114.
-
-
Can I plug this into my computer directly?
-
No. This is an XLR microphone. You need an Audio Interface (like a Focusrite Scarlett or Audient EVO) that provides 48V Phantom Power.
-
-
Is it good for rapping?
-
Yes. The fast transient response of the 22mm capsule makes it excellent for articulate, fast-paced vocals like rap, keeping the words clear and distinct.
