The “Edge-Terminated” Advantage

Most microphones in this price range use “center-terminated” capsules, which can sound harsh or brittle. The C114 uses a 26mm Edge-Terminated Capsule inspired by the vintage AKG CK12 (found in the classic C12 and ELAM 251).  

• The Sound: This design allows the diaphragm to vibrate more freely, resulting in a smooth, silky top-end and deep, rich lows without the “nasal” quality of cheaper mics.

Is This The Right Mic For You?

Vs. AKG C414 XLII The C414 is the industry standard, costing 5x more. The C114 gets you surprisingly close to that “family sound” with the same edge-terminated capsule philosophy. If you don’t need the C414’s 9 polar patterns and filters, the C114 is the smartest budget alternative.

Vs. Audio-Technica AT2050 The AT2050 is a great multi-pattern mic, but the AKG C114 offers lower self-noise (12dB vs 17dB) and the superior Edge-Terminated Capsule design, giving it a smoother, less “hyped” top end that takes EQ better.

Vs. AKG C104 The C104 is Cardioid only. For a small price increase, the C114 adds Omni and Figure-8 patterns and a Shock Mount (instead of a hard clip). The versatility makes the C114 a much better long-term investment.

• Does it come with a shock mount?

  • Yes! Unlike the cheaper C104, the C114 includes a custom high-quality shock mount to isolate the mic from floor vibrations.  

• Can I use this for ASMR?

  • Absolutely. With a self-noise of just 12 dB(A), it is incredibly quiet, making it perfect for capturing whispers and subtle textures.

• What is the “Figure-8” pattern used for?

  • Figure-8 captures sound from the front and back but rejects the sides. It’s great for recording two people facing each other (like a podcast interview) or for “Mid-Side” stereo recording when paired with a cardioid mic.  

• Does it need a pop filter?

  • For vocals, yes. We highly recommend adding a pop filter to protect the capsule from plosives (air blasts).
