Gretsch's ready-to-play Energy drum set brings signature Gretsch features, sound and performance to a complete starter kit. Its 7-ply poplar shells and full-size 22-inch configuration give a big, full sound for practice, lessons and first gigs, so you start on a kit you will not outgrow quickly.
The shells are cut with 30-degree bearing edges, the edge profile Gretsch is known for. Compared with a sharper 45-degree edge, a 30-degree edge keeps more of the shell in contact with the drumhead, so the drums sound warmer and rounder, with fewer overtones and more of each drum's fundamental pitch. That makes the kit easier to tune to a pleasing sound.
Energy comes with a five-piece hardware pack: a chain-drive bass drum pedal, hi-hat stand, snare stand, straight cymbal stand and boom cymbal stand. There is nothing else to buy before you can set up the drums, apart from cymbals and a drum throne.
The 10-inch and 12-inch toms have five lugs each, so there are fewer tension rods to adjust when you tune them. Both toms sit on a double tom holder with 12.7mm arms on the bass drum, which makes positioning them simple and repeatable.
The drums are finished in Ruby Sparkle, one of Gretsch's Nitron finishes. The snare and toms have 1.6mm triple-flanged steel hoops, and the bass drum has matching wood hoops for a classic look.
Gretsch has been making drums since 1883, when Friedrich Gretsch opened a small music shop in Brooklyn, New York, making banjos, drums and tambourines. Fred W. Gretsch, the founder’s great-grandson, later bought the company back and returned it to the family.
Gretsch drums have been played by Max Roach, Art Blakey, Elvin Jones, Jimmy Cobb and Charlie Watts, and its USA drums are built in Ridgeland, South Carolina.
