The Tama STAR Walnut represents the peak of Tama’s acoustic drum engineering. Its all-walnut shells deliver a warm, fat fundamental with powerful low end, while Japanese Sen outer plies and the Garnet Japanese Sen Burst lacquer give this six-piece kit a distinctive flagship finish. Die-cast zinc hoops add focus and projection, and Tama’s low-contact hardware allows the shells to resonate freely.

All-walnut shells with Japanese Sen outer plies

Walnut is prized for its warm, full-bodied response and deep low-end presence. The toms, floor toms and snare use 6-ply, 6mm shells; the bass drum uses a 7-ply, 7mm shell for added strength and low-frequency projection. Two outer plies of Japanese Sen bring visual depth to the lacquer finish without compromising the character of the walnut shell.

Rounded bearing edges for a fuller response

STAR bearing edges use a rounder peak than Tama’s traditional profile, increasing contact between the drumhead and shell for efficient vibration transfer. The peak sits 3.5mm from the shell’s outer surface, helping produce a broad, resonant note with strong body and sustain.

Die-cast zinc hoops and Hold Tight washers

Dense, precisely formed die-cast zinc hoops deliver a crisp attack, focused tone and strong projection while supporting stable, repeatable tuning. Tama’s cup-shaped Hold Tight washers incorporate a rubber ring that helps keep tension rods secure under heavy playing.

Hardware designed around resonance

Low-mass bridge lugs, floating bass drum claw hooks, an imprinted badge and a compact wooden air-hole grommet minimise hardware contact with the shells. The result is less restriction and more of the natural walnut tone in every note.

Super Resonant Mounting System

Tama’s three-point Super Resonant Mounting System supports each rack tom with minimal stress on the shell and hoops. Rubber-isolated contact points reduce vibration transfer to the stand, allowing the drum to sustain naturally while remaining securely positioned.

Quick-Lock brackets for faster setup

Quick-Lock brackets separate into two parts at the slide of a switch. The memory-lock section stays on the stand or floor-tom leg, preserving the drum’s position for the next setup. Rubber lining further isolates the drum from its support hardware.

Resonance-focused bass drum spurs and floor-tom legs

Soft, high-mass rubber feet absorb impact at the bass drum, while the optional spike is isolated from the spur body by rubber. Hollow, soft rubber floor-tom feet perform the same role at the floor, supporting a comfortable response and long, natural sustain.
