EST. 1883 — BROOKLYN, NEW YORK

THAT GREAT GRETSCH SOUND

In 1883 a German immigrant named Friedrich Gretsch opened a shop at 128 Middleton Street in Brooklyn, making banjos, tambourines and drums for the marching bands of the day.

He died twelve years later, but the family carried the company on — and the drums found their way behind the players who were inventing modern music. Jo Jones, Chick Webb and Billy Gladstone were among the first to take them up.

More than a century and a variety of badges later, the sound is the reason the name endures. The world’s most recorded drum sound is now here in India.

1883
Friedrich Gretsch opens a shop at 128 Middleton Street, Brooklyn, making banjos, tambourines and drums.
1895
Friedrich dies while visiting Hamburg. The family takes the company on.
2013
The iconic round badge returns to the kits for the company’s 130th anniversary.
